Adam Price MS has today welcomed the extension of the voting franchise in Wales to 16 and 17 year olds. This change comes as part of the Senedd and Elections (Wales) Act 2020. 16 and 17 year olds will now be able to vote in the 2021 Welsh General Election.

Adam Price said “Extending the right to vote to 16 and 17 year olds in Wales is an exciting development in our country’s history, and I fully support this expansion of the voting franchise. With the wealth of information that is available in the modern age, it is increasingly fitting that young adults can take an active role in our democracy.

This change will empower the young people of Wales to actively shape the kind of country they want to live in. Giving a voice and a vote to our 16 and 17 year olds is a welcome, progressive step in the function of Welsh democracy. I would strongly urge those eligible in the next Welsh Election to register themselves and to get out there and use their vote.”

The Senedd and Elections (Wale) Act 2020 also extends the franchise to “eligible foreign nationals in Wales”, and changes the name of the legislature in wales to “Senedd Cymru” or “Welsh Parliament” – another change that has come into effect this past month.
